My husband and I dreamed of building a house in the country for 15 years. We chose vertical ICF construction for our new home because it allowed us freedom of design, and it is an environmentally friendly construction technique. My brother, who worked construction, remarked at how little waste was on the site during the construction.
Our ICF home is energy efficient; it meets or exceeds energy star and earthcraft certification criteria. We have already calculated that our winter energy costs for this 2600 sq ft home are approximately the same as our costs for our older, wooden "stick-built" 900 sq ft home. A week ago we had an 11 inch snowfall and temps in the teens (Farenheit); two days ago it was almost 80 degrees outside. But inside our ICF home, the "weather" is consistently temperate and comfortable. It has remained very stable in spite of the outdoor fluctuations in weather and temperature. I attribute this to the remarkable insulating ability of the ICF walls.
Additionally, the ICF provides excellent soundproofing, which is why I sleep soundly in spite of the train track 60 feet away from the bedroom! I could continue to detail the benefits of this construction method, but instead I'll just say that I recommend vertical ICF to anyone who is looking to build an enduring, secure, environmentally sound and beautiful home. I LOVE my new house!
